The humble, inexpensive microfiber towel is perhaps one of the best tools to ensure perfect curly wash-day results. A microfiber towel absorbs excess water from curls and waves without leaving them dull or frizzy. It can also:

  • Prevent roots from drying flat due to being weighed down from moisture in the hair as it dries.
  • Help with the clumping process.
  • Cut down on diffusing times.
  • Provide you with better curl definition.

To get the most from your microfiber towel, follow these tips:

Rotate the towel

Rotate the towel as you use it so that you are always working with a dry section. This will ensure that the towel can efficiently remove excess moisture.

Squeeze upwards

When using the towel, squeeze upwards from the mid-shafts of the hair to the scalp, or from the ends of the hair upward. Work in small sections to avoid disturbing curl clumps.

Flip upside down

If you have high porosity hair that tends to stick together in the back, flip your head over and scrunch with the towel.

To avoid flat roots

Using the towel, scrunch as much water as you can from the mid-shafts of your hair up to the roots. Allow your hair to air dry for several minutes, and then scrunch again with your bare hands. This will prevent your roots from being dragged down from the water in your hair.

To get lush, bouncy defined curls

  1. Finger-coil wet or damp curls.
  2. Place a dry section of the towel over your palm.
  3. Place 2-3 curls at a time in the palm of your hand and then scrunch upwards to your scalp. When you are finished, scrunch your roots with the towel.
  4. Allow your hair to air dry, or use a diffuser.

To boost the volume at your roots

  1. To soaking wet hair, apply leave-in conditioner in sections.
  2. Ensure that your hair is fully detangled using your fingers and/or a wide-toothed comb.
  3. Place 2-3 curls at a time in the palm of your hand and then scrunch upwards to your scalp. When you are finished, scrunch your roots with the towel.
  4. Spray a pump of mousse or volumizing foam into a dry area of the towel, and then scrunch a small section of hair at the root.
  5. Hold the towel in position for a few seconds to ensure that the towel has absorbed any excess moisture.
  6. Repeat for all roots that need a boost.
  7. Allow hair to air dry, or use a diffuser.
