The weather has turned chilly, and my outdoor garden is no longer in action. That means it’s officially microgreen season! While microgreens can be grown year-round using different methods, I tend to forget about them during the busy summer months when the harvests of other greens are plentiful. As the cool weather nudges me indoors, I always find myself reaching for my microgreen supplies—this season, with a new twist.
Last spring, I connected with the folks at IND Hemp in Ft. Benton, MT. They produce various hemp-based products, including chicken bedding and—you guessed it—hemp microgreen growing mats. They kindly gifted me a handful to try, and I couldn’t wait to experiment. I loved the results so much that we are officially selling Hemp Fiber Microgreen Mats at Green Thumbs!
Here’s the basics of what I did:
Six days later, I lifted the blackout tray and was thrilled to find a lush bed of radish microgreen sprouts! Three days under the LEDs, and they were ready to eat. It really is that easy to grow your own microgreens. The best part? Harvesting is so much easier with the hemp mats—no soil mess or rogue perlite chunk that crunches in your teeth. Just cut the greens above the mat, and they’re ready to enjoy. I have also noticed that my harvest window us much longer than with other common growing medias like potting mix.
Step 1: Prep the Hemp Fiber Mats Place the hemp mat in a tray with holes and stack it on top of a tray without holes. Add water and let the mat soak for 3-5 minutes. Then drain any excess water.
Step 2: Sprinkle the Seeds Seed generously!
Ensure seeds are spaced enough to allow airflow, but don’t stress too much about perfect seed spacing. As you continue to grow microgreens you’ll be able to nail down the amount of seeds that best suits your growing methods.
Step 3: Mist the Seeds Gently mist with a spray bottle or mister. Avoid heavy streams of water that might displace the seeds. If seeds clump together, do your best to spread them back out.

Step 4: Blackout the Seeds Cover the tray with a blackout dome (a tray without holes). Keep the seeds in the dark for 7-10 days (or more, depending on the variety). This encourages the stems to stretch, making them easier to harvest.
Step 5: Water and Monitor Check daily to ensure the seeds don’t dry out. They might smell a bit odd and look pale during the blackout stage—don’t worry! Once exposed to light, they’ll regain their color and smell fresh.
Step 6: Move to the Light After 7-10 days, remove the blackout tray and place the microgreens in a bright window or under seedling lights. Continue watering as needed. Most microgreens are ready to harvest 3-5 days after moving to light.
Step 7: Harvest and Enjoy! Harvest by cutting the greens just above the hemp mat. Rinse if needed and enjoy fresh microgreens in your favorite dishes!
